Overview

Who: April Caouette, perpetual temp worker/agent of the uncanny valley
Pronouns: uses she/they interchangeably, but answers to anything
What: not human, though very convincing.
Where: April works at the William Lyon Mackenzie King Institute of Paranormal Studies, out of a decommissioned Emergency Government Headquarters in an undisclosed location in Canada. Through an [UNDEFINED] temporary employment agency, on a seemingly perpetually renewing contract.

Personality:
Exhausted with their workplace but clocks in anyway to get the job done, holds a petty grudge against anyone who slights them, avoids putting themselves at risk, treats killing/traumatizing humans as a banal, everyday part of life (but doesn't have an edgelord manifesto about it). Comes off as deadpan until you get them riled up about their niche passions, like their pent-up opinions on office/supernatural politics or modernizing methods of feeding on humanity. And they have a lot of opinions. Generally calm otherwise, unless you're proposing something really boneheaded to them (or near enough for them to hear). Always willing to offer advice (because they want to sound like an authority on something, not because they actually want to help).

Appearance:
You're pretty sure they have short/mid-length brown hair, brown - or hazel? green? eyes, maybe freckles, a nose that's either straight or crooked, definitely a mouth of some kind, probably skin - normal, that's it, you're sure she - they - looks normal, unremarkable. Exactly what you expect when you look at a receptionist, or a file clerk, or an office assistant.

Abilities
It's impossible to perceive their face and hard to remember who they are, unless efforts are made on either end. This is, in part, just the nature of being a temp worker, but also because they're a supernatural creature based on unclear images/memories. Photos or film with them on it have messed up faces, but most people who meet April don't notice anything amiss until they try to remember what they look like, where they'll slowly realize they're not actually sure about the features they're describing.
(April can also just make photos develop in a very cursed image sort of way, but that's less likely to come up in direct interactions without some kind of set up.)

Their generic appearance tends to leave people with a feeling like they've seen them somewhere before, though whether that's an actual supernatural ability they have or just a result of how average they look is debatable.

April is an OC with some partially/completely blank face body horror, so if that's not your thing you can let me know and I'll avoid those icons! Or emphasizing that part of their tags too much.

Also in Come Sail Away, there is a non-zero chance that April's best friend Flan [personal profile] yourexoduslaughing may literally drop into a thread with April, so please let me know here or on their opt-out if you don't want that.

The Magnus Archives AU
Sometimes I play April as they would appear in The Magnus Archives. Longer profile for that version of them is over here!
As for spoilers for the series, I've seen it all, though I mostly play ambiguously season 3-mid season 4 setting-wise. I'll try to avoid directly talking about major series spoilers (unless you're someone playing past that point, or say you're fine with it). For more detail about April and spoilers, click here.

OOC:

Backtag: very yes. whether that means like, getting back to a thread that's been quiet a few days, or finding a top comment in an oldass bakerstreet meme and wondering, 'oh can I tag this or would that be weird?' the answer is yes you can tag haha

Threadjacking: In memes where it's like, q&a and dialogue, like text memes or advice memes or other things like that, you can cut in if you'd like! Longer-form threads, I'd prefer you ask first!

Tag Revision: If I goof up in a tag or if you need a better hook, you're absolutely welcome to message me for an edit!

Reminders: If it's been a few days and you haven't heard from me but want the thread to keep going, I don't mind at all if you poke me! I'm a full time student with organizational issues so odds are I meant to get back to you but got so caught up in something else that I lost track of the days. Go ahead and poke me and I'll let you know if I can continue or not!

IC:

Death/Injury/etc: If you want to do anything dramatic violent-wise to April in a thread (or want april to do some weird monster shit to you) then let me know so I can take the scene there! Otherwise I assume any skirmishes or powerflexing will be minor or near-misses, and likewise on my end I'll leave it open to hit or miss etc.

Mindreading: Sure, you're mostly going to get a lack of surprise at the strange and supernatural, and a background thought of 'I'm not getting paid enough for this'. And, uh, what I write in the non-dialogue parts of the tag, of course.

Pinging her being not-human: Not immediately, but if you spend long enough around April you might notice how her features and name seem to slip from your memory.
If you're supernaturally able to, or experienced with human imitations (I.e., if you're clairvoyant, got a lens of truth, are affiliated with the Beholding, or have dealt with a lot of human-imitating things before), you can guess off the bat that April isn't human.

Seeing Her Face: Nothing beyond being able to tell you eyes aren't seeing what your brain is saying is there, at least not without asking me first. ^^; If you want that forbidden knowledge, though, let me know and I can work something out!

Physical Contact: You have my permission, but April hates it and will withdraw if you put your hand on them unless you're past the 'acquaintance' threshold with them.
Flirting: Go for it, but April will shoot you down.
Sex: Extremely Unlikely.
Horror/Gore/Etc: April herself is a light body horror monster who feeds on humans, so April is just fine witnessing or participating in acts of horror, violence, and gore. 👍

Opt-In: Do YOU want to be cursed by April? Have your photos haunted by spooky faces, or an image you can never live up to, or a distortion that does not match your self image, and so on? Let me know here or in a DM or anywhere and I'll happily work something out!
Filing those serial numbers off at last.

Who: April Caouette
Pronouns: Uses she/they interchangeably, but responds to anything
What: A being that feeds on the discomfort of those faced with the uncanny valley and doubts about identity. Not exactly a spirit, but definitely not human. an analogue horror jumpscare with a day job
Where: April works at the William Lyon Mackenzie King Institute of Paranormal Studies (or MKIPS), which is located in a partially converted cold war government safety bunker in an undisclosed location in Canada. Or to be specific, they work for a temporary employment agency and are contracted out to the MKIPS as a temporary employee. They've been doing this since about 1990

The MKIPS is a federal institution devoted to cataloguing reports of the strange and supernatural, including the collection of evidence or objects of interest.

Appearance:
They appear to be a young white woman in her mid twenties, short-medium-ish brown hair and eyes that are brown or green or maybe hazel? Probably has freckles, definitely has a mouth, er, is five foot... something?

April's appears to be whatever a person expects when they picture an admin assistant or receptionist or file clerk. Because of their appearance based on assumption and the human brain filling in what isn't there, people find it hard to describe her in ways that don't sound very generic. They'll recognize her when she walks into the office... Or feel like they should, with her name at the tip of their tongues but never clicking.

Physically, April appears human shaped, but they don't bleed when injured, and seem to recover quickly from what should be broken bones. They have more in common with photo paper than with meat. The real threats to their being are fire and acetone or similar print-destroying chemicals. You might have to wipe them down pretty hard to make it stick, but it's not pleasant for them whether it's fatal or not. Ripping big pieces of them off is an inconvenience they can reassemble from eventually; turning them into confetti is another story.

And that's just in the realm of mundane ways to fight them. Other paranormal beings suited for destroying and consuming the essence of others will find April a very, very easy opponent.

Abilities:
April can manipulate any photo they are in or that they take, and generally is aware of when something is trying to capture their image. Usually they're just out of focus if they show up at all, but if they're putting their mind to it for feeding/entertainment purposes, they can change how the picture developments. This ranges from blurring faces, to making something uncanny like an AI generated portrait, to subtle adjustments to a person's picture that will make them doubt their self-image. That kind of thing.
April can also just straight make her face look like it does in the pictures, if they want a quick and cheap scare.

As mentioned in the appearance section, April themselves is indistinct. They can give off a feeling of familiarity to people talking to them, that feeling that you know this person from somewhere but you've forgotten their name, and how terribly rude is that? They're hard to describe, and trying to focus in on what you remember them looking like just makes those features slip away more.

April can force some of their features to be more prominent and memorable, mainly to get a point across (specifically, how mad they are that you haven't submitted your expenses yet, or didn't properly sign out that cursed item, or are trying to book a meeting when there's no spaces left). Similarly, if it occurs to someone to concentrate hard enough, they might notice that April's face isn't as there as their mind says it totally is.

It is not recommended to try seeing her real face clearly.

Also people never remember her name, but according to April that's as much being a temp as it is being an ambiguous identity creature.

Long version: )

Personality:
Short: Exhausted but still clocking in to work, hates talking about themself, claims to be professional but if given a slight reason will ramble off every opinion they have about office or supernatural politics and will shit talk everyone they don't like. They are very petty, and will hold a long grudge over a small inconvenience.

Interested in continuing to exist, unfazed by the idea of killing, consuming, or traumatizing humans because they and others like them have to do that to live, so it's as morally questionable as eating a slice of toast. Talks about all of the above the same as any 'normal' topics around the water cooler. Complex thought does not exempt humanity from the food web.

And despite it being a cover, sincerely does their 'day job' and WILL hold a grudge if you make their work harder for them. Conversely, if you do something to make their life easier, then they won't mind you. Do it without asking and they are now ride or die for you.

Long version: )

History
Short: April came into existence when the early photographs on the way to perfecting the process came out wrong enough to be creepy. In the early photography days, they ran a portrait studio or otherwise offered their photography services for hire. Eventually, cameras became more accessible to people, so they moved to film development counters and big box photography studios (think getting your film developed at Costco or your picture taken at a Sears). They eventually catch wind of official organizations investigating the paranormal, and in an attempt to get ahead of things they infiltrated the local branch of it, first as a temp hire to process film evidence, but progressively more and more banal and nondescript jobs in the office machine.

They've been stuck there from the early 90s to present day, and the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, they're too committed to their sunk cost to leave now.

Slightly Longer Timeline: )

OPT OUT: Weird Faces

Some of April's icons may involve the absence of facial features that should be there, or features that shouldn't be there, or are other wise distorted (think thatcher effect, excessive eye imagery etc). If seeing that at even a 100x100 resolution is uncomfortable for you, please let me know here and I'll post with her more normal icons when threading with you!

OPT OUT: Besties

April's best friend and coworker [personal profile] yourexoduslaughing is now on the ship, and may or may not jump into threads with April if the timing is right. Let us know if that's something you'd like to avoid!

OPT IN: Get Haunted!

Part of April's deal is that she is basically a living creepypasta image. Part of how she sustains herself is by taking 'cursed images' or making them cursed by being in them.

The result ranges from:
- I saw this creepy picture/video too late at night and it's been a week and I still think about it when I close my eyes
- something is wrong about this picture of me but I can't think of what it is and it's destroying my self image
- I saw this image once and screamed and don't ever send it to me again
- This face is showing up in my nightmares and I'm legit having trouble sleeping
- normally photoshops don't affect me but what the FUCK
- Okay so there definitely wasn't an extra person there when the picture was taken, I'm going to be looking over my shoulder for awhile.

- Visually, think the 'identifying an alternate' segment in the mandela catalogues or the emotions advert on blue channel.

The idea is that it lingers in a person's mind in an upsetting way, those spooky image edits you've seen that mentally scar you a little bit.

So! with that said, let me know here if you want your characters running into that with April!

EDIT It turns out writing horrible things for someone else's character completely blind is hard, so if you'd be so kind as to fill out the following:

Thanks!

How much her images affect your character and what your character does about it is entirely up to your discretion, too. You know your character's constitution best!

(Consider this a volunteer sign-up sheet for pursuing this sort of story with them, or permission to have your characters mention being unusually disturbed by a picture they saw, this isn't an immunity check!)

But my character can't see these pictures!

April:
that So No Head vine of a guy smashing his phone then skateboard

Then this especially does not apply to you at all! Enjoy your cruise and the company of your absolutely normal cruise friend, April!

Canon: Original, set around 2022
Age: 196, give or take. Appears to be ambiguously twenty-something.
History:

Full profile here, but in brief:

Something like April existed, with other beings, as long as humans could create images that looked like real things, specifically as long as these early artists attempted to portray real things but landed off-target enough to be uncomfortable to look at.

April, as a being with a sense of intent and individuality, existed from a little before the first photograph was successfully developed. The failure turned out... wrong, and April attached to that feeling of revulsion, of almost-recognizing something.

And while photography was a booming success, April posed as a photographer, taking many pictures of many people in their portrait studio and feeding from the discomfort and distress and other things the people holding their photos were left with.

Not every photograph, of course, but enough to sustain themselves on the awareness and unease their work created.

Times changed, photography became a cleaner, less-specialized process, and they moved into more modern roles for film development, before trying to change careers entirely. They’d seen the results of people clinging to the past and old legacies before, of course.

At this time, there were also organizations springing up to study the spiritual and supernatural. April thought they were being clever, killing two birds with one stone by insinuating themselves into the Mackenzie King Institute of Paranormal Studies. If someone’s taking a magnifying glass to the world of the unknown and uncanny, she figured it’d best to be behind that lens, or too close to be in focus, plus they’d get to feel out a new way to make people uncomfortable. And if they find evidence of themselves in the archives, then they can just fix that.

They infiltrated as a temp from an agency, originally for archiving photos, and then branching into different departments, filing, data entry, inventory...

Only they’ve found themselves stuck there, in a repurposed safety bunker, bouncing from assignment to assignment on a temp worker’s wage and benefits, which is to say minimum and nada. Sure, the supernatural feeding is fine, yeah, it’s something to do, but dear god, is it worth answering so many e-mails?

I am caught up to the entire series! However, I try to play April ambiguously in a late season 3-season 4 range, depending on what fits the prompt, because I feel like that offers a flexible scenario for people familiar and unfamiliar with the series.

But, as for where April specifically is and what they specifically know, season-to-season:

Season 5 BIG SPOILERS )

Season 5: April's Domain )

Season 4 )

Season 3 )

Season 2 )

Season 1 )
April is a fan OC for The Magnus Archives! They're an agent of The Stranger, and they claim they were never human, they just manifested like this.

Canon Character interaction: April knows of the people working in the Archives, but due to their nature there's been no personal interaction. At least, none that anyone remembers. That said: 1) I may assume a little CR for texting threads, but nothing beyond the level of 'that person you kinda know from work' 2) if you want to assume CR, go for it! April assumes people don't remember much about them, so they'll be pleasantly/horribly surprised!

The Short Version:
Personality: Exhausted but still clocking in to work, hates talking about themself, claims to be professional but if given a slight reason will ramble off every opinion they about office or supernatural politics. The LONG Version:

History: )

PRESENT DAY: April is still here. It's a little bit out of habit, a little bit she's gotten used to getting paid and using that money to buy treats, which is much easier than anonymizing yourself on security camera footage and shoplifting things... But also, honestly, a longstanding, spiteful game of chicken with Elias to see if he's ever going to make her a permanent employee, or give her vacation or benefits or a bonus or anything. (whether elias even knows she exists or not is up to the player, april is very insignificant)

These days, she can be found in out of the way offices, the kind that probably were originally storage closets, and she mostly records and tracks inventory... both the mundane kind, and the artifact kind, depending on which one has been busier. Both of them amounts to her sitting at her computer, typing up data from forms and matching it on spreadsheet, and then going out to count the inventory and make sure it all adds up. And, inevitably, needing to figure out who didn't sign the goddamn artifact they were researching out. The hell of being an inherently anonymous creature is that no one remembers her tracking them down to fill out their forms, which inevitably means the cycle repeats, as is often the case in horror stories.
